Today we’d like to introduce you to Katlin Hall.
Hi Katlin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Speaker, Learning and Development professional and an improvisation enthusiast.
At a young age, I loved presenting and speaking in school.
After graduating from Miami University Farmer School of Business, I began my career consulting on learning and development programs at CEB, now part of Gartner. From there, I helped launch the business division at The Famous Comedy Theater, The Second City Chicago, where I learned improv and brought its principles to organizations ranging from the Brooklyn Nets to AbbVie’s entire sales force, as well as the workforce at Johns Hopkins Laboratories.
Knowing I wanted to return to Ohio to start a family, in 2018 I combined my background to found improv2grow. Through primarily referrals, I grew the business—delivering over 100 workshops across 11 states, 75 keynotes to audiences as large as 3,000 participants, and working with clients such as Howard Hanna, Deloitte, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and all the State Treasurers.
I’m most grateful to have created a life where I can use my talent in public speaking, exercise my business skills, and also be primarily a stay-at-home mom.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road, which confirms I am on the right path. I truly enjoy each session, knowing I’m leaving the audience with actionable new skills. I’m having fun, which is my biggest telling sign.
The only struggle was the Covid pandemic. With no one meeting in person, and my content not translating well in a virtual setting, I didn’t have much work during that time. However, after, people were craving human connection even more!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Throughout my career I listened to clients needs and adapting to give them what they needed. While at Second City, common feedback was the actors delivering the training were fun, however, they couldn’t relate to a business setting. I knew improv and I knew business – enter my point of difference.
In addition, many clients wanted an hour training session. The improv professionals at Second City would only conduct 3 hour+ trainings, believing you couldn’t teach the power of improv in only an hour. Understanding how hard it is for professionals to be away from their day-to-day, I was able to adapt a training to fit an hour and still be impactful!
My ability to listen, adapt, and apply has been the foundation for my success.
I’m proud of taking the risk, trusting myself, and in turn impacting organizations while creating a career for myself that still allows me to be primary a stay-at-home mom.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
We all feel imposter syndrome at some point. Push past it. Trust yourself. Courageously participate and you will succeed.
