Today we’d like to introduce you to Allyssa Powers.
Allyssa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I went to school to become a therapist. I current own a private practice as well as a continuing education company called Allyssa Powers LLC where I teach therapists how to start, build and grow their private practices all while earning continuing education credits.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a mostly smooth road. The hardest part has been how much education we need to get licensure and how we need continuing education to maintain it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Allyssa Powers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC-S), and I’m on a mission to fill the gaps in our learning about private practice and business ownership.
I had to learn everything the hard way about building and sustaining my own private practice. I read tons of business books, listened to podcasts and made SO many mistakes along the way. However, even with all the trial and error I had to do I still absolutely loved owning and running my practice and I wasn’t half-bad at the business side of things, in fact I fell in love with learning how to make, market and sustain my mighty little biz.
I consider myself to be a highly driven person, so when I set my mind to something I am going to figure out how to make it happen. I had always wanted to own my own business and I figured other people do it, so how hard can it be? I had a lot of determination, a slight caffeine addiction and the whole internet at my fingertips.
Now I am full time with Allyssa Powers LLC and my mission is simple yet powerful. You were trained as a therapist, not a business owner, our continuing education changes that.
We learn so many things in grad school about how to take care of our clients, but next to nothing about how to run a thriving business, even through for many of us we end up having to wear a clinical hat as well as a business owner hat. Our continuing education closes the gap in learning about business, marketing and SEO.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
So many people have played crucial roles in building this company. First and foremost, my own therapist and clinical supervisors early in my career showed me what mentorship truly looks like, they modeled the generosity and investment in others that I now try to bring to my work.
My early clients deserve enormous credit. The therapists who took a chance on my courses when I was just starting out gave me the confidence to keep going. Their feedback shaped everything – they told me what they actually needed to build sustainable practices, not what I assumed they needed.
I’ve also been fortunate to have a few key business mentors who helped me understand that being a great therapist and running a great business require different skill sets. Jenna Kutcher particularly helped me see that teaching therapists about business wasn’t “selling out” – it was actually an extension of the work, helping clinicians stay in the field sustainably.
My husband has been an unwavering supporter, especially during the early days.
