Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Brickman.
Hi Devin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started when I was just 14 years old, cutting lawns for a few of my neighbors. Word started to spread, and soon people from my church began asking if I could take care of their lawns too. Before I even had my driver’s license, I had clients from Parma all the way to Strongsville. My Poppa used to drive me around after school with my one push mower so I could get every job done. A few years later, I invested in my first truck, a riding mower, and a few more tools, which felt like a huge step at the time. Once I could finally drive, things really took off. Fast forward a few years, I hired my first employee, and that’s when Lawn Busters truly started to grow from a small neighborhood gig into a full-fledged business. Today, we have 7 dedicated mowing crews and offer a full range of landscape services, from new lawn installations to hardscapes and complete outdoor transformations. What started as a summer side job has become a company built on pride and hard work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. In this line of work, something is always bound to break, whether it’s a mower, a truck, or a trailer. There have been plenty of long days where the plan completely changed because a piece of equipment went down or the weather didn’t cooperate.
When you’re growing a business from the ground up, you wear every hat: mechanic, scheduler, accountant, and crew leader. There were times I’d finish mowing all day, then spend the evening fixing equipment or sending invoices. Finding reliable help in the busy seasons has also been a challenge, especially when you’re trying to maintain high standards and serve your customers well.
But looking back, every setback taught me something; how to adapt, problem solve, and keep pushing forward. The rough days are what make the wins that much more rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We do all things landscape and outdoors. What started with mowing has grown into a full-service company that handles everything from lawn maintenance and new lawn installations to hardscapes, patios, and complete outdoor makeovers. Whether it’s designing a new yard from scratch or giving an existing space new life, we take pride in bringing our clients’ vision to reality.
I’m most proud of how far we’ve come and the reputation we’ve built. Our clients know us for being reliable, honest, and detail oriented. We care about every yard like it’s our own. We’ve built long-term relationships with customers who trust us year after year, and that means a lot.
What sets us apart is the level of pride we take in our work. We’re hands on, local, and invested in every project from start to finish. We’re not just cutting grass or laying pavers. We’re creating outdoor spaces people truly enjoy spending time in.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has definitely played its part, both good and bad. There have been plenty of moments where things didn’t go as planned, like equipment breaking down right before a big job, weather wiping out a full week’s schedule, or unexpected expenses popping up at the worst times. Those moments can test your patience and determination.
But I’ve also had a lot of good luck along the way. I’ve crossed paths with great customers who believed in me early on and stayed with us for years. I’ve had family and team members who’ve stepped in to help when things got tough. I think luck opens doors, but hard work is what keeps them open. Every challenge, whether good or bad, has pushed me to grow the business and appreciate how far we’ve come.
