Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekhi Chives
Hi Mekhi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From a young age, I have consistently demonstrated a strong inclination towards artistic endeavors. My interest in graphic design was sparked by a desire to transform my physical artwork into digital formats.
In January 2020, following a job loss precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, I took the initiative to establish my own graphic design company. This venture was driven by a commitment to support the growth and success of small businesses, particularly those owned by Black entrepreneurs.
By leveraging my artistic skills and passion for design, I aim to provide these businesses with enhanced visual communication strategies that empower their brand identities and help them flourish in competitive markets.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Working as a graphic designer presents its own challenges, much like embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship at the age of 18. To successfully manage my business, I had to balance my sensitivity and passion for art with the practical demands of running a company.
Clients often overlook that graphic designers are creatives who go beyond simply delivering a product; we are in the business of turning dreams into reality through our designs. Additionally, financial management is a skill not typically taught, yet it is crucial for sustaining and growing a successful business.
In the absence of formal guidance on money management, I had to learn independently, recognizing its importance in achieving long-term success for both myself and my company.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am recognized for my diverse skill set in the field of graphic design. My specialization lies in creating branding solutions that are not only sleek and professional but also visually striking and aesthetically appealing.
What distinguishes me from my peers is my capacity to adapt and tailor my services to meet the specific needs of my clients. My experience spans a wide range of industries, including restaurants, beauty brands, boutiques, and healthcare brands, each contributing to a comprehensive and diverse portfolio.
This varied experience has honed my ability to deliver customized design solutions that effectively capture the unique essence of each business I work with.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I appreciate the abundance of talent across various fields that Cincinnati offers. The city’s vibrant community allows me to name a local small business catering to virtually any need or interest.
However, one aspect I find less appealing is the absence of beaches in Cincinnati, particularly as someone originally from South Carolina, where coastlines are a familiar and cherished part of the landscape.
